LV Showcases 2012 model brakes by BMW Motorcycle

From: Las Vegas Review-Journal

After pioneering the concept of anti-lock brakes on motorcycles 23 years ago, BMW Motorrad USA has announced that it is the first motorcycle manufacturer to offer ABS as standard equipment on its entire range of 2012 model-year motorcycles.

"At BMW Motorcycles of Las Vegas, were really excited that BMW has made ABS standard for the 2012 motorcycles. As an avid rider for the past 30 years, there hasnt been another technology that makes such a dramatic impact on the safety of motorcycling than ABS," said Mike Hansen, general manager of BMW Motorcycles of Las Vegas. "The 2012 K1600GT and K1600GTL have amazing handling and power and with the added benefit of ABS, incredible stopping ability."

BMW-K1600GT-Brakes

"We commend BMW for taking the lead to improve motorcycle safety," said David Strickland, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "Motorcycle fatalities and injuries have been on an upward trend for the past 10 years, and ABS and other safety technologies can help reduce these tragedies."

A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety revealed that motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brakes are 37 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than models without ABS.

"I commend BMW for taking the lead in making ABS standard across the board," said Adrian Lund, institute president. "Our research results show ABS on motorcycles saves lives, and riders are taking note, too. A recent survey found that a majority of riders said they would look for ABS on their next bikes."

According toth institute, many factors contribute to motorcycle crashes, but improper braking was identified as a major factor in a study of motorcycle crashes. When brakes are applied too gently, the rider risks colliding with an obstacle. If  brakes are applied too hard, wheels can lock and cause an overturn. ABS is crash avoidance technology, meaning it helps reduce brake pressure by detecting an impending lockup and then increasing pressure again when wheel traction is restored. Brake pressure is evaluated by a sensor multiple times per second, so riders may brake fully in a straight line without fear of locking up.

Many law enforcement agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, concluded after testing that ABS reduced the number and severity of accidents and now mandate them on their police motorcycles. Internationally, BMW is the largest seller of motorcycles for law enforcement use. More than 80,000 BMW police motorcycles are currently in official use in more than 150 countries on five continents. In the United States, more than 225 law enforcement agencies have BMW police motorcycles in their fleets of patrol vehicles.

2011 Honda CB1000R

The Honda CB1000R is a new take on a timeless concept. A no-nonsense superbike thats not afraid to show off its muscle where everyone can see it. We took a CBR1000RR powerplant—and retuned it for even more midrange power and torque. Then we built a special chassis that puts the engine out front and center, and that also lets you sit more upright. The result is one of the most versatile open-class bikes the world has ever seen. And also one of the best looking.
2011 Honda CB1000R Monster

But don’t wait to decide. Let your dealer know you want one, because availability will be limited for this model!

Available "Spring 2011"

2011 Honda CB1000R Features and Benefits

Superbike Power:

The new Honda CB1000R is built around a superbike-strong 998cc DOHC inline four engine. Basically, we took a CBR1000RR powerplant and retuned it to deliver a bare-knuckle blast of power thats perfect for street riding, with plenty of torque and power on tap. Since its a four cylinder, its plenty smooth for longer rides too.

When Youve Got It, Flaunt It.
The new 2011 Honda CB1000R has nothing to hide. On the contrary, itd be a shame to cover up that awesome engine, so weve put it out front and center so you and everyone else can enjoy it. Then our designers gave the CB1000R just enough styling touches (side radiator shrouds, fork-mounted cowl fairing, cast aluminum four-spoke wheels) to really set it apart. Check out the result for yourself. European Model Shown.

Easy to Handle.
The Honda CB1000R offers exceptional handling, thanks to a Gravity Die Cast mono-backbone aluminum chassis thats light and strong, a fully-adjustable inverted fork, and adjustable Pro Link® rear suspension with a single-sided swing arm.

2011 Honda CB1000R Technicals

A simple design, packed full of innovation.

The new CB1000R is a perfect example of Honda innovation. Combining power, light weight, and refined, responsive handling with its good looks, it’s equally at home on a sportbike ride, a weekend-long getaway, or a boulevard prowl.

998cc DOHC Engine - The CB1000R uses a 998cc inline-four engine based on our CBR1000RRs, but tuned to produce more torque and horsepower in the midrange and bottom end–the perfect combination for a machine like this.

Lowboy-Style Muffler - The Honda CB1000Rs lowboy muffler not only looks cool and sounds great, it also offers a handling advantage by moving the silencer lower and closer to the bikes center of mass.

Single-Sided Swingarm - Proven on Hondas endurance racebikes, the Honda CB1000Rs single-sided swingarm not only looks awesome, but makes rear-wheel maintenance easier as well.

Pro-Link Rear Suspension - CB1000Rs Pro-Link® rear suspension offers spring preload and rebound damping adjustability.

our-Into-One Exhaust - Looks great, sounds great, and helps increase performance: Hows that for a win-win-win situation? The four-into-one header with its flowing pipes pays homage to classic Honda inline fours of the 1970s like the CB400 Supersport. Some things just never go out of style.

Gravity Die-Cast Aluminum Mono-Backbone Frame - Gravity Die-Cast technology gives the CB1000R a chassis thats strong, but light. The single backbone architecture links the steering head to the swingarm pivot, but without any frame spars to interrupt the CB1000Rs lines.

PGM-FI Fuel Injection - The CB1000Rs Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) ensures crisp throttle response and both low- and high-rpm performance. In addition, theres no choke to mess with, and the CB1000R runs perfectly at all altitudes and temperatures, even on cold mornings.

Radial Front-Brake
Calipers - The CB1000Rs radial-mounted monoblock front-brake calipers are stiffer, for better brake feel and performance. Each caliper uses four pistons that squeeze lightweight 310mm floating discs for exceptional stopping power.

LED Position Light - Uniquely styled, the LED Position Light is a compelling design feature that shows everyone that this is not any ordinary motorcycle. Its a Honda.

All Digital Instrumentation - CB1000Rs high-tech, all-digital instrument display features tachometer, plus LCD readouts for speedometer, coolant temperature, odometer, two tripmeters and a clock, mpg and average fuel consumption.

Fully Adjustable 43mm Inverted Fork - A bike as powerful as the new CB1000R needs top-notch suspension components. Thats why we gave it a stout, large-diameter 43mm inverted fork thats fully adjustable. And its also one of the reasons why the CB1000R handles so well.

Adjustable Brake and Clutch Levers - CB1000Rs adjustable brake and clutch levers let you fine tune for the riding environment, and tailor fit the controls to your riding style.

New MotoGP Tire For Le Mans Debut

The 2011 MotoGP Championship heads to France this weekend for the French Grand Prix at Le Mans, which will occur May 15. At the Le Mans (French) GP, Bridgestone, the sole tire supplier in MotoGP, will introduce a new asymmetric rear slick tire. Bridgestone says the soft option rear is Bridgestones first soft asymmetric offering, and features soft compound rubber in the right shoulder with extra soft compound in the left side. The MotoGP tire was initially schedule to make its debut at the Japanese Grand Prix, which was postponed due to the March 11 Earthquake. Bridgestone says the MotoGP tires provide better initial grip and warm-up performance and will provide better performance in the cold conditions that can be expected in France. The nature of the Le Mans circuit is also slippery which demands softer compound rubber to generate good grip.

Asymmetric-Slicks-Tyre-For-Le-Mans-Circuits
w
Asymmetric rear slicks are required to provide good durability and stability through the nine right-handed MotoGP corners at Le Mans while not sacrificing warm-up performance in the left side of the tires, which is only used five times each lap.

Bridgestone says Le Mans can be called a stop-and-go MotoGP circuit, which is to say that rather than being a flowing lap it is punctuated by a succession of heavy braking points followed by hard acceleration.

Heavy braking places emphasis on the center section of the front tires, while the hard acceleration out of corners means good edge grip is important. Having said that, with its smooth tarmac and low temperature Le Mans is the least severe circuit of the 2011 MotoGP year for tires which is why the soft and medium front and rear slicks have been selected by Bridgestone.

The weather in the region is unpredictable and whilst last year was dry, in recent years the race has been interrupted by rain so Bridgestone have selected the soft wets for the fourth time this year in MotoGP.

Hiroshi Yamada (Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department) says: "The French GP is always popular with fans and is a large and important race for Bridgestone and our local sales companies too. Im also pleased that we have developed a new tyre over the winter that we are using for the first time at Le Mans. It shows that we are not resting on our laurels and still working hard and constantly developing our MotoGP tires, listening closely to the riders in an effort to provide them the best possible tyres in terms both of performance and of course safety."

Hirohide Hamashima (Assistant to Director, Motorsport Tire Development Division) says: "Le Mans is a slippery and smooth circuit, and run early in the year when the track temperature is low, so softer compound tires are required to generate grip and this is why we will use our new soft asymmetric rear tire in France. We developed the extra soft compound at the end of last year and used it in Portugal and Valencia, but over the winter we have incorporated it into a soft compound asymmetric tire which is totally new. It is designed to work when the conditions are colder to warm-up faster and provide riders with better feeling in the first stages of use.

"The circuit has quite a stop-and-go nature, although the last part of the lap is high speed. Lateral loads placed on the tyres are relatively low but good stability under braking is crucial, especially into turns three and nine which come at the end of the two straights. The circuit has an asymmetric layout that uses the right shoulders harder, hence our choice of asymmetric rear slicks."

Bridgestone slick compounds available: Front: Soft, Medium. Rear (asymmetric): Soft, Medium

2013 Kawasaki Ninja ZX 6R Preview Pictures

2013 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R Preview, Pictures - Those interested in the medium Kawasaki racing will still be able to buy the remaining shares of 2012, but once theyre gone, youll either have to race against the big bikes 636 or switch to another brand. Kawasaki reps are not able to give an official answer about the future variants of 600cc, leaving us to speculate the door may still be open to legal competitors in the race.

But back to the new bike. A bump on the stroke from 42.5mm to 45.1mm account for the larger 37cc engine. Bore remains the same as last years model at 67.0mm. Digital fuel injection using a 38mm Keihin throttle bodies, while both the intake and exhaust ports to get the size.

Intake Camshaft set for a longer duration, and both cams to get a ride up too. Connecting rods are shorter than the previous 1.5mm thick but have stems, which enable them to cope with the long throw crank. After this, the engine received updates strength-enhancing or reducing the friction-many.

Airbox gain 12.5% more internal volume, and ultra-fine atomizing injector spray now sub-60-micron droplets. This means that highly efficient combustion for better power and torque throughout the rev range.

A F.C.C. new clutch with "assists" and flip function helps put power to the ground. The "help" action cam as servo mechanism to pull the clutch hub and plates together and operation of the clutch plates compress under load. This allows the clutch spring tension and the total amount will be reduced, resulting in an overall decrease of 20% in an effort at the clutch lever.

Cam assists also increases the maximum torque capacity of the clutch, to help cope with the extra power of a larger engine, without gaining weight. Function sandals should be familiar by now to any sportbike fan, because it keeps the rear wheels from locking during downshifts jumping and aggressive.

Using the wheel-speed sensors KTRC, ECU monitors speed, brake caliper pressure, engine rpm, throttle position, clutch actuation and gear selection. The KiBS ABS ECU communicates with the engine ECU, and when it senses a potential lock-up situation told ABS unit to temporarily reduce brake line pressure. It does so while reducing pulsation in the lever during the intervention.

I was one of the lucky few have sampled the new motor with ergonomic screen model sitting on this morning before his debut in New York City today. It feels very similar to its predecessor, with the driver placed in a position such as advanced riders. The bar was not feeling very low and the stakes are not too high.

The Ninja ZX-6R 2013 will be available in three colors: Pearl flat Stardust White, Metallic Spark Black and Lime Green. Price has not been determined as of this writing.
